Free jumped into the National Guard and an Afghanistan adventure. Jimmy followed his blue-collar roots to stay home. Free returns lost and wandering. Jimmy’s path has left him needing more from life. Free’s troubles come full circle to find Jimmy trying to save Free from the dark side of sServing your Country. Jimmy provides Free some shelter from the darkness.
But, plagued by PTSD’s addiction and nightmares, Free is slipping through Jimmy’s safety net into drugs and despair. Jimmy’s desire to save Free leads him to kill Free’s drug Dealer, forcing them both on the run in Jimmy’s houseboat down the Ohio River.
Running down the River, another Compatriot soon finds them, at a crazy Red Neck party spot. Darla, a wild child woman with at least as many problems as Free has and who is a bit too far out of high school to have excuses. The Boy’s free her from her violent boyfriend and together they flee down river in the middle of the night.
At a sketchy mini mart, Darla’s protective instinct soon kicks in when she saves trafficked young girls from sex slavery. A fisherman they befriended earlier saves all of them from the violent kidnapper’s retribution. As their voyage continues, they encounter the many sides of America, natural Beauty, good friends and urban lawlessness. Free struggles throughout to break free of his Demons with Darla and Jimmy helping him out along the way.
The farther down river they go, the more nature and family come into play to save them all. The river’s flowing heart transports them around the walls holding them in. Adventurous encounters with nature and genuine country people offer the experiences they need to grow. As the river flows, so does the love between Free and Darla.
Arriving In Nashville, the fabled entertainment Nirvana of America’s Heartland, they set out to celebrate and enjoy their journey. All the City’s excitement and danger comes out to greet them.
Free finally finds his center of strength and reaches out to a fellow Vet in need and suddenly he finds Jimmy and Darla threatened from the same danger he survived at the top of the story. Free now saves Jimmy and defeats the darkness inside himself. On the precipice of new lives for all of them, they take the plunge into a bright future—by jumping together from the John Siegenthaler Bridge and into new lives of love and fulfillment.
